VNN Ask The Governor summary for August 2008

If you missed the August edition of Ask The Governor on VNN, here's what you missed.

1.    Governor Kaine was in Denver at the Democratic National Convention.  The first segment touched on the convention itself and Kaine's appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  Kaine says that the highlight of the convention was what happened during the roll call of all the states.    Kaine was asked if he was concerned that conventions are more "infomerical" than anything dramatic.    Kaine wonders if the role of the convention is changing to more of an energizer for the party.   He does say it feels good to be front and center at this convention rather than being stuck in the cheap seats.

2.  Kaine fielded some calls wondering what happened to the record breaking surplus that Governor Mark Warner left office with.  Kaine says that a lot of state revenues is tied to the real estate market, and the budget is not a "set it and forget it" thing.   Kaine was asked about the shortfall and whether or not his projections were too optimistic.   Kaine says all projections are done in a consensus--including the Republicans.   Kaine says in February, he said that projections needed to be lowered, but that was denied.  He also says he's not holding off on budget cuts until after the election.  He criticized Republicans for not coming up with plans of their own.

3.   Kaine received more calls from people wondering why our budget is in the tank.   The strangest call of the show was a caller who wanted to know why it was illegal in Virginia to have a captive bred de-scented Neutered or Spayed Domestic skunk as a pet.    He says it's not a rabies issue, and the animals are available through reputable breeders.    Kaine says he learns something new every show, and he didn't realize that it was illegal.  He went on to say a good way to get people upset is voting against animal bills.

4.  Governor Kaine says he will be speaking the last night of the convention at Invesco Field at Mile High before Barack Obama makes his acceptance speech.    He also spent part of the segment talking about Barack Obama and John McCain's tax relief plan.   He says that Obama plans to cut taxes for small business and also he plans to give a tax rebate to middle class families.     Kaine also dodged questions about whether he would be interested in a cabinet position if Obama were elected, and whether or not he would be interested in being the next president of VCU.

Join us for the next edition of Ask the Governor tentatively scheduled for Thursday September 25th.
