VNN Ask The Governor summary for October 2008

If you missed the October  edition of Ask The Governor on VNN, here's what you missed.

1.   Governor Kaine says you can expect long lines at the polls on Tuesday...and he believes the state is prepared for a large turnout if that is the case.   Regarding the recent lawsuit filed by the NAACP against the state, he believes the State Board of Elections is very much in tune with minority voting issues.  All the three members of the Board are minorities.   Kaine says, to avoid the crush, the best time to vote is either during the mid morning or the mid afternoon.    Regarding Richmond mayor's Doug Wilder's request to extend voting hours to 10 p-m, Kaine says he has no control as to how long the polls are open, but he doesn't believe it's necessary since everyone who is in line at 7:00 will get a chance to vote--regardless of how long it takes for them to get through.

2.  Host Jimmy Barrett asked Kaine about Barack Obama's relationship with former Weather Underground Domestic Terrorist Bill Ayers.   Kaine says that Ayers and Obama don't have a long, meaningful relationship.  While in Chicago, Obama was asked to serve on a charitable board by Ayers.   Kaine says Obama doesn't agree with Ayers' past and what he stood for as a member of the Weather Underground.   A woman called expressing concerns that workers for the Democrat party had forced her son, who's in a halfway house in Vermont, to register to vote.   The woman didn't know if it was strictly a Democrat issue, but was wondering if it was taking place in Virginia.   Kaine says he wasn't aware of the problem.

3.   This segment began with Chesterfield Republican State Senator Steve Martin calling in and saying that he thought he had heard of instances of Democrat party workers going into mental institutions and forcing people to register to vote.    Martin says he has a letter to show Governor Kaine that documents it happening.  Kaine says he was not aware of the problem, and requested that State Senator Martin let him see the letter.

4.   Kaine answered a question from a woman who wanted to know what the policy was for restoring voting rights to convicted felons.  Kaine says he looks at each case individually, and if they're not a violent offender and haven't had any trouble in 3 years since their release from prison, he usually restores those voting rights.   The other half of the segment went over the Barack Obama tax cut plan for the middle class and the often used "spread the wealth" term that has been used by Obama.

Join us for the next edition of Ask the Governor.  Because the last Thursday of the month of November is Thanksgiving, and late December is such a busy time, the next Ask the Governor will be sometime in early December.  Stay tuned for a specific date.  We hope you can join us.
