MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF SERVICE

The Virginia News Network was founded in 1977 when Charlottesville Broadcasting Corporation began distributing newscasts to a handful of affiliates via telephone line from its flagship station, WINA-AM.

Six years later, VNN was purchased by Capitol Broadcasting of Raleigh, North Carolina, which moved its headquarters to Richmond and began delivering its signal via satellite to stations in every corner of the state.

In 1993, Clear Channel Communications of San Antonio, Texas acquired VNN. Clear Channel is a global leader in the out-of-home advertising industry with radio and television stations, outdoor displays and entertainment venues in 40 countries around the world.

To improve the audio quality of its programming, Clear Channel switched from analog to digital satellite transmission in 1997. With this multi-channel technology, the network could offer more programs. While VNN remains the cornerstone of its programming, the network umbrella now also includes the University of Virginia Sports Network and “In The Garden” with André Viette Network .

Today, radio stations – both within and outside the borders of the Commonwealth – are affiliated with the Virginia News Network.
